This term, the children in Year 1 have been answering the question ‘What is beyond our world?’

Children started their topic with the museum learning artefacts that they were going to use throughout their topic; a star map and a telescope. The children enjoyed exploring and getting familiar with the artefacts.

To dig deeper into our learning, we had a visit from the space dome. Year 1 had the opportunity to enjoy an interactive and immersive experience where they were transported into space and explored the solar system. Our history topic covered the early days of space travel and how scientists began with fruit flies and small insets to see whether it was possible for humans to go into outer space. Then, Scientist sent dogs and monkeys before eventually Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.

The children in Year 1 learned about William and Caroline Herschel, two remarkable siblings based in Slough who made significant contributions to space science. William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus and built powerful telescopes to study the stars, while Caroline Herschel became one of the first female astronomers, discovering comets and cataloguing stars. Their work, carried out right here in Slough, expanded our understanding of the universe and inspired future generations of scientists. The children enjoyedexploring their discoveries and learning how they shaped the study of space!

Year 1, High Stakes project was to create a video presentation answering the big question 'What is beyond our world?' which will be sent out via Teams at the start of the new year. Year 1- High Stakes Project
