Year 6 - What was the impact of legislation on children in the Victorian era?
BackThis term, our pupils have engaged in a thought-provoking exploration of the question, "What is the impact of legislation on Victorian children?" This high-stakes project culminated in creative poster presentations, where each class researched distinct areas of legislation and articulated their findings regarding its impact on the lives of Victorian children. Through these presentations, students gained an in-depth understanding of various laws and their implications in a historical context.
Additionally, our curriculum included an engaging reading of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, allowing children to analyse key extracts that provided insights into the era. This literary work informed their writing tasks, in which they independently crafted character and setting descriptions, as well as newspaper articles, effectively linking their reading and writing skills.
To deepen their understanding of the Victorian period, students participated in a workshop where they learned about the everyday lives of children at that time.
In science, our focus was on evolution and inheritance, examining the groundbreaking work of Charles Darwin. Meanwhile, in computing, students explored the fascinating history of computers, including the significance of Bletchley Park.
In art, children expressed their creativity through the thematic project, "Make My Voice Heard," which connected ancient Maya art to modern-day street art, highlighting how artists communicate powerful messages. Together, these activities have enriched our students' knowledge and understanding, fostering a sense of historical awareness and creativity.
