Year 5 - Do clothes define who we are?
BackIn year 5, we embarked on a fascinating journey with our Big Question- ‘Do clothes define who we are?’ Inspired by the vibrant world of fashion, we explored how clothing trends can both reveal and shape our identities. Using Dennis from ‘The boy in the dress’ as our guide, we delved into the complexities of identity and self- expression, discovering that clothes can serve as both a shield and a statement. Auggie’s journey in ‘Wonder’ deeply resonated with us especially the quote- ‘Don’t try to blend in when you were born to stand out.’ This quote sparked a celebration of our unique selves.
In DT, we designed and created our own waistcoats, each piece reflecting our personal identity and flair. We were fortunate to have parent volunteers join us, sharing their sewing expertise. Children then showcased their masterpieces by walking the Heritage Fashion Runway- part of their High Stakes Project.
As part of our Museum-learning, the children explored dolls from different cultures and heritages, examining paper templates dating back to the 50s and learned about the use of bobbins and a hand operated sewing machine.
Additionally, a representative from the Anti-litter society enlightened us on the dark side of fast fashion, which we also explored during our sustainability fieldwork in Geography. The children also
conducted an audit of plastic use in school and evaluated ways to reduce plastics, enriching our understanding and ecological responsibility. It would be boring if we were all the same, wouldn't it?
