Year 3 and 4 Learning Highlights
BackYear 3
Another busy half term within Year 3 where the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Ancient Egyptians through our big question ‘what were the greatest achievements of the Ancient Egyptians?’. The children have enjoyed studying different artefacts from this period and their learning was then further consolidated with a fantastic trip to Eton College where they were able to look at more artefacts, hear from an expert on the time and complete several different activities. The children were fantastically behaved and showed The Langley Heritage values throughout the trip. As part of this topic the children have also been making Ancient Egyptian scrolls and have produced their own rags to riches story that has linked to our book ‘The Egyptian Cinderella’.
Within science, year 3 have been focussing on healthy eating; a topic that the children knew a lot about and were enthusiastic to share
their learning. They have understood the different food groups and the importance of a healthy diet alongside investigating different food labels. The children were shocked at what some foods contained and reflection of this was seen by many.
The children have also taken part in maths week, children’s mental health week and internet safety day where they enjoyed completing several different activities. One of their favourites was being able to go to the computing room to be able to work as a whole year group on times tables rockstars. Friendly competition seen by all!
Year 4
This term Year 4 were answering the big question of 'How does the design process shape our world?'. We kickstarted our term with a fantastic workshop about inventions that changed our world which was run by The Divergent Drama company where we learnt about inventors such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.
We then spent a number of weeks reading a book called 'Have you Thanked an Inventor yet?' in which we met lots of different inventors and found out how they identified a problem people faced before they came up with their invention to solve it. This prompted the start of our creative process where the children identified a problem they face on a daily basis and they delved into a design day where they came up with designs of inventions to solve their problem.
We then held a Dragon's Den style High Stakes Project session where some experts from our community came to be judges for some of our brave children who decided to pitch their invention to them-they were simply incredible! To end our unit and in conjunction with Children's Mental Health Week, we read a poem called 'The Magic box' and children wrote their own versions of their poem thinking about all of the things that were really precious to them.
