Year 5: What caused the rise of Bagdad in 9th century?
BackThis term, our Year 5 scholars have embarked on an exciting journey back to the 9th century to uncover the secrets behind the rise of Baghdad!
Our Big Question: What caused the rise of Baghdad in the 9th century?
Through the captivating story found in The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad by Saviour Pirotta, the children followed thirteen-year-old Jabir through his trials and tribulations as he saves his family from being made homeless. In English, the children were delighted to have a sensory experience that attempted to bring the culture of 9th-century Baghdad to life. They had the opportunity to feel the texture of sand, savour the sweetness of Loukoums, dates, and enjoy the refreshing taste of mint tea.
In Art, the children sketched architectural drawings of buildings and palaces that were influenced by the era. They used a compass to create their geometric patterns. Additionally, the children had the unique experience of writing their names using the Arabic alphabet in calligraphy, which gave them a deeper appreciation of the art and beauty of the language.
As part of Museum Learning, the children visited the V&A Museum, where they participated in a workshop examining beautiful Islamic artefacts, including pottery, carpets, tapestries, and calligraphy. They created their own tiled vegetal patterns, using symbolism and repeated geometric patterns.
In History, they dug deep into the intricate connections of the Silk Road, learning how trade played a crucial role in shaping the connection between the East and Europe. Children researched influential scholars of the era, uncovering how their ground-breaking advancements in technology, medicine, astronomy, and travel continue to impact our world today. They identified primary and secondary sources, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the historical context and the enduring legacy left behind.
We're incredibly proud of our Year 5 children for their hard work and creativity this term! As part of their High Stakes project, we will be showcasing their learning to the whole school, so stay tuned for more updates!
