Year 4's Exploration of Boudicca: Understanding History Through Source Interpretation

This term, Year 4 has been exploring the fascinating question: “What does source interpretation teach us about Boudicca?” Through this investigation, the children have developed valuable skills in understanding how history is pieced together and how different perspectives shape the way we view the past.

The journey began with an exploration of the difference between primary and secondary sources. Our Museum learning team provided us with some primary sources, such as Roman coins and ancient accounts, offered a direct window into the past, while secondary sources, including modern interpretations, provided context and explanations. The children discussed how both types of sources are important, but reveal different aspects of Boudicca's story.

The class also examined the contrast between pictorial and written sources. Written accounts, often created by Roman historians, depicted Boudicca as a fierce and vengeful leader, whereas images sometimes portrayed her as a noble protector of her people. This sparked thoughtful discussions about why these interpretations could vary, allowing students to delve deeper into the ways history is recorded and remembered.

A key focus throughout the term was understanding bias. The children considered how the perspectives of those creating the sources—whether Romans or Britons—might influence how Boudicca’s legacy was shaped. They engaged in lively debates about whether she was a heroic leader or a ruthless destroyer, forming their own opinions based on the evidence they had explored.

To culminate their learning, the children created their high stakes project, their own pictorial interpretations of Boudicca. These artistic pieces reflected their personal views and demonstrated both theircreativity and understanding of history.

We are excited to announce that some of these remarkable creations will be featured in a special booklet. This booklet will celebrate their hard work and provide a unique insight into how they have interpreted Boudicca’s legacy. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into their learning journey!
